Copper futures down on soft demand

Copper futures were trading lower during the noon trade in the domestic market on Friday as speculators offloaded their bets to book profits.

Analysts attributed the fall in copper prices to offloading of positions by participants amid muted demand at the domestic spot market. At the MCX, copper futures for September 2019 contract is trading at Rs 452.30 per kg, down by 0.69 per cent, after opening at Rs 442.90, against a previous close of Rs 454.40. It touched the intra-day low of Rs 452.00.

ITA seeks intervention for revival of tea sector

A day after a specialty tea created history by fetching Rs 70,501 a kg, the Indian Tea Association (ITA) here on Thursday appealed the government to ban expansion of tea estates in five areas and pay provident fund (PF) contributions of workers for three years.

Stating that the tea industry is in crisis, the ITA said viability of the sector was critical for job security of over million workers. While the average selling price had remained static, the production cost was increasing, causing losses to tea producers, it said.

"The PF contribution by the government for three years will provide immediate relief, besides releasing substantial fund for generic promotion of tea," the ITA said. It also demanded minimum reserve price for tea at auction based on cost of production.

On Wednesday, an Orthodox Golden Tea tips fetched Rs 70,501 a kg at the Tea Auction Centre, here, to rewrite the record set on Tuesday when Manohari Gold Tea attracted Rs 50,000 a kg.

Copper futures up 0.36% on robust demand

Copper futures were trading higher during the late morning trade in the domestic market on Wednesday as speculators raised their positions amid pick-up in demand at the spot market. Analysts said firm trend in base metals at the physical market mainly led to rise in copper prices here.

At the MCX, copper futures for August 2019 contract is trading at Rs 446.90 per kg, up by 0.33 per cent, after opening at Rs 446.00, against a previous close of Rs 445.45. It touched the intra-day high of Rs 447.20.

Copper futures slide amid soft demand

Copper futures were trading lower during the morning trade in the domestic market on Tuesday as speculators offloaded their bets to book profits. Analysts attributed the fall in copper prices to offloading of positions by participants amid muted demand at the domestic spot market.

At the MCX, copper futures for July 2019 contract is trading at Rs 443.95 per kg, down by 0.34 per cent, after opening at Rs 445.40, against a previous close of Rs 445.45. It touched the intra-day low of Rs 443.65 .

Copper futures end lower as dollar strengthens

Copper futures ended lower on Friday as the dollar hit an over two-week high against a basket of major currencies, making dollar-denominated commodities such as copper cheaper for non-US firms, after strong jobs data for June.
 
Reports showing US employers added 224,000 jobs in June, and the unemployment rate edged up to 3.7 percent, the US Labor Department said in a report on Friday.

Copper futures for September delivery fell 0.8 percent to settle at $2.661a pound on the Comex metals division of New York Mercantile Exchange. Copper on the London Metal Exchange ended down 0.3 percent to $5,902 a metric ton.
